Steve Jobs told students: ‘Stay hungry. Stay foolish.’

Steve Jobs, the late Apple co-founder being called the Thomas Edison of his time, revealed in a commencement speech at Stanford University in 2005 why he dropped out of college — and why he thought it was one of the best things he ever did. Yet he had other advice for the students.

Jobs, whose death at the age of 56 was announced Wednesday night, started that speech by telling about being adopted as a baby, and why, 17 years later, he attended Reed College  in Oregon for only six months before dropping out. He said:

“My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: ‘We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?’ They said: ‘Of course.’

“My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.

“And 17 years later I did go to college.

“But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents’ savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn’t see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn’t interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

“It wasn’t all romantic. I didn’t have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends’ rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5 cent deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the seven miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example.

“Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn’t have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can’t capture, and I found it fascinating.

“None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But 10 years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, it’s likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do.”

At the end of the speech, his advice to the students went like this:

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

“When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog,“which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960’s, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and Polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.

“Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.” It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.

“And I have always wished that for myself.

“And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.

“Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.”

What is insanity?  I think it is doing the same thing that you have always done expecting a different result.  We go through life like robots.  Our lives start to become predictable.  We get comfortable.

Being comfortable is not a good thing.  The most growth you will ever experience is when you are out of your comfort zone.   The way our world and economy is changing right now you can’t rely on the government for your retirement.  Social Security might become a thing of the past.  It is time to get out of your comfort zone to secure your family’s financial future.

I want to talk about a few statistics relating to your financial life straight from the Social Security Administration.

Take an example of 100 people.  By the age of 65:

  • 94 will be dead or broke.
  • 5 out of the 100 people will make in excess of $60k a year
  • 1 person out of the 100 will be “Wealthy”

74% of those considered wealthy are business owners.  The other 26% are celebrities, athletes, etc.

This should set off alarms in your head saying we will probably never get rich working for someone else.  You need the LEVERAGED income that you get from owning your own business.  The richest people in the world made their money be leveraging their employee’s time and talents.  The 1% became wealthy by creating leverage, owning their own business.

Network Marketing is a business you own that can provide leverage.  It is a bona-fide profession.  Some of the most successful people in the world today have chosen to become part of this great industry.  This is the best way to create leveraged/residual income.  You will get paid on your own efforts as well as the efforts of all your team.  As this team continues to grow, so does your residual income.

Now we can say that INSANITY is doing the same thing you have always done expecting to be wealthy.  It probably isn’t going to happen.  Here is a great line from Steve Bushemi (Garland Green) from the movie ConAir:

“What if I told you insane was working 50 hours a week in some office for 50 years at the end of which they tell you to piss off, ending up in some retirement village, hoping to die before suffering the indignity of trying to make it to the toilet on time.  Wouldn’t you consider that to be insane?”

YES

-Lead By Example

A true winner must also be a leader.  We could go back in time and look at any championship sports team and you would find a leader somewhere on that team.  Someone who makes every player better.  Michael Jordan was a winner.  He was a winner because he took a group of guys that were not superstars and he made every one of them look at least two times more talented than they really were.  He did this through words and actions.

To be a winner you must be vocal.  When I say vocal it does not mean you are talking all the time.  Perhaps the opposite.  Learn to say what must be said in every situation you are in.  You will find that if you spend time getting to really know the people around you in life and business, you will find what motivates them to push their limits and achieve more.

Danny White always talks about how Tom Landry never had to raise his voice to get his points across.  He knew exactly what drove each player on his team, so there was no need to yell.  He would simply say what needed to be said.  The players responded because they had complete respect for the man.  He was a vocal leader without having to be too vocal!

To be a winner and lead by example you must practice what you preach.  I had a very good friend of mine tell me that when he first got into Network Marketing he bought every book he could find on the subject.  He ended up with twenty books.  He tried to contact the authors of each book to ask some personal questions.  He ended up getting in touch with sixteen of the authors.  Only one had ever built a sizeable organization in Networking.

Be willing to do exactly what you are telling your team to do.  This will make you a winner in the eyes of everyone on your team.  I would never tell someone to do something that I am not also willing to do.  This will build camaraderie in your group.  It will also help to create momentum.  When momentum starts in full gear, look out!  You and your group will be winners in everything you do.

-Be Gracious

Be thankful for everything you have been blessed with in your life.  You will never reach your dreams without a little help along the way.  I hate when people get a sense of entitlement.  I look at the state of professional sports in America right now and it makes me sad.  We have athletes making tens of millions of dollars a year and they still always find something to complain about.

A true winner is grateful for the opportunity he/she has been given.  Be humble.  Most people can spot phoniness immediately.  Be gracious towards everybody you encounter.  This is especially true with your team.  Be thankful for all they do to help build the team.  Periodically pick someone out in your team and call them, or send a little message to tell them how thankful you are that they are a part of your team.  This will go a long way to making you become a winner.

-Don’t Ever Lie

Nothing will make someone lose faith in you as much as a lie.  If you say something, make sure it’s the truth.  If you promise a phone call, an email, or a meeting, make it happen.  Keep your word.

Too much of our industry is built off of hype.  I hate hype.  If your product has not made you lose 40 pounds in a week, don’t say it has.  People want the truth.  I can always tell when someone is trying to sell me a line.  Be realistic.  There is a difference between trying to motivate someone and just hyping something.

Social media has made it very easy to hype or lie about something.  Sometimes it is not a blatant lie at all.  I call it stretching the truth to fit your needs.  You can take something and twist and turn and make it sound really good for you.  For example, you can make the statement that you have added 650 reps to your business in the last two weeks.  The problem is that you personally did not add any it was people above and below you in a binary compensation plan adding to a power leg.  This is stretching the truth.  It is hype.

If you will be honest in all your words and actions you will become a winner.  It doesn’t matter what you do in life, there isn’t a need to lie.  It makes you look desperate.  People will lose respect for you. Be honest and do what you say you’ll do and people will look up to you and follow you.

-Set High Goals

I’ve found that many people are afraid of goals.  They may not even realize it, but in truth the idea of setting a goal is daunting.  Why?  Quite simply I think it’s because we fear failure, and if you set a goal and fail to achieve it, you’ve failed, right?  Wrong.

Isn’t taking a step or two toward a goal considered progress?  And progress is never failure.  One of our kids’ favorite movies is Meet the Robinsons.  When little Lewis, budding inventor, builds a machine that basically explodes, his family cheers!  They claim, “from failure you learn – success, not so much.”  Although he fell short of his goal, Lewis was learning and perfecting.  And with time and yes, some failure, he would come to meet that goal.

Goals are meant to be adjusted and reevaluated.  That’s why it’s so important to set parameters around your goals, consisting of deadlines and smaller goals with their own deadlines.  It provides the opportunity to make necessary adjustments.

An unorthodox trainer, a half-blind and dejected jockey, and a reborn owner knew that their injured and written-off horse could be a champion.  They shared a goal, an unattainable goal by most standards.  And yet we laud Seabiscuit as one of the greatest racehorses America has seen.  The three once-rejects never lost sight.  Share your goal with someone who can believe it and let them cheer you through to the end.

Take careful consideration and time in setting your goals.  Set them high and envision yourself achieving them.  With persistence and faith, you will soar.  And you may even hit your mark.

-Never Quit

One of my heroes in life is Garth Brooks.  He has two songs that have touched my life in so many ways.  The first song is called, “The Dance.”  My favorite line from this is, “I could have missed the pain, but I’d have had to miss the dance.”  Most people are scared of the pain.  We will start something with good intentions, but at the first sight of struggle, we quit.  We think we might feel embarrassed, shamed, lost, beaten, or simply tarnished.  No great accomplishment has ever come to pass without some sort of struggle.  Don’t ever turn your back on “pain.”  It is through this pain that you will emerge a winner.  So many people have quit when in the next moment they would have found success.  Figure out what your “Dance” is in your life, and fight through the pain and you will find abundance on the other side.

The second song that inspires me is “Standing Outside The Fire.”  Garth sings, “Life is not tried it is merely survived if you’re standing outside the fire.”  That is POWER!  The video to this song is about a young man with Down syndrome who wants to be on the high school track team.  He has a very supportive mother who encourages him, but a father that is scared to see his son might fail.  It comes time for the first track meet and the young man trips and falls halfway through the first event.  It shows his mother running down from the seats to get to her son.  Before she is able to get to him the father gets there and encourages the boy to get up and finish the race.  With blood pouring from his mouth and nose he does.  He was inside the fire.  He didn’t quit.  If you ever want to accomplish something special in your life you must get in the fire.  Risk the chance of being burned.  Dance within the flame!  It is not living if you stand outside the fire.

Never quit. It is the easiest cop-out in the world. Set a goal and don’t quit until you attain it. When you do attain it, set another goal, and don’t quit until you reach it. Never quit.
~ Bear Bryant ~

It is not the critic who counts. Not the man who points out where strong men stumbled or where doers of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually IN the arena…whose face is marred with dust and sweat and blood. Who strives valiantly and who fails again and again. And who, when he succeeds, knows the triumph of high achievement. And who, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly so that his place will not be among those cold, timid souls who knew neither victory or defeat.
~ Teddy Roosevelt ~

Make the decision to be a winner.  Do what it takes.  As you become a winner you will inspire others to follow you into that winners circle.  This is when you will start to see great achievement happen in your life and in your business!
